The International Congress of Ethnobotany (ICE) is not structured and maintained by a particular organization. It is a series of meetings, coordinated by an international committee in conjunction with different local committees. The aim of the ICE is to bring together scholars interested in ethnobotany from various areas of this discipline.
The first meeting held in Córdoba, Spain, from the 20-26th of September 1992, and was called "Ethnobotánica' 92". It was hosted by the Jardín Botánico de Córdoba and its International Committee included several pioneers of our discipline, such as Richard E. Schultes and Jack Harlan, who are not with us any more. Ethnobotánica'92 included eight symposia and four round tables, and over 600 delegates from various countries, especially Spain, Portugal, and Mexico participated.
The second meeting was held in Mérida, Yucatán, Mexico, from 12-17 October 1997. It was sponsored by the Universidad Autónoma de Yucatán and the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México. It focused mainly upon Mesoamerican ethnobotany. This meeting received around 400 attendees, whose works were grouped in 15 scientific sessions.
The last and third meeting was at Naples, Campania, Italy, from 22-30 September 2001 and was hosted by the Botanical Garden of Naples and University of Naples Federico II. Its title was "Ethnobotany in the third millennium". Because it was held just after the 11th of September, many scholars from the Americas could not participate, but over 250 delegates presented papers and actively joined in discussions on a large range of topics combined in seven sessions and a symposium, in addition to poster sessions. In Naples we took the responsibility of organizing the next meeting in Yeditepe University, Istanbul, Turkey, and now would like to share this event with all of you, with the ones who have participated previous meetings, and with other scholars and students who will join this series of congresses for the first time. We are all welcoming you to Istanbul, where two continents meet!
The Proceedings of the Third International Congress of Ethnobotany have been published as a special issue of Delpinoa (Vol.45-2003). A number of copies of the Proceedings are generously donated to the benefit of the Fourth Congress, so some will be on sale in Istanbul. Proceedings can also be requested from Prof. Aldo Moretti, Dipartimento di Biologia Vegetale e Orto Botanico, Via Foria 223, 80139 Napoli, Italy. The requests can be made also by fax (+390812538523 or +39081450165) or e-mail moretti@unina.it. The cost of each volume is €15.00 (without postage).
We hope that we can create another unforgettable meeting with your help, and that, at the end, a new country and new organizers will take the flag from us, and will invite us to a new town for the 5th International Congress of Ethnobotany.
